REMINISCENCING THE GOOD OLE DAYS

While talking to this farmer he begin talking of another time and place in his past when life was much simplier and things were different. We traded stories of record crop years and I listened as he shared his vision of the future.

Was the fellow thinking of the times before Saddam?

I was thinking on the same wave link as anonymous. Did he refer to time pre-Saddam or in the last 30 yrs?

MSGT, I love your photos and comments, it is so nice to see just ordinary Iraqi rural life. I have a question if you might know the answer. I am taking an Arabic course here and my instructor is Palestinian. Today we were having a pre-Ramadan feast and got to talking about dates. She mentioned that there is some very specific type of date that ONLY grows naturally in Iraq, no where else. There is apparently some story about the Jews eating these dates to survive while in captivity in Babylon...would you have any idea what date she is talking about? She couldn't remember the exact name.
Thanks so much...I rarely comment, but I read your blog a lot and often send your photos to the Washington Post in a weekly e-mail of positive news I send to show them there are things going on in Iraq other than car bombs!!

    Take care, Debbie K

All the Iraqis I ask know nothing of the story you describe. Perhaps a little more information would be helpful. As you may or may not know all dates orginally came from Iraq.

The vision was of a time when he was a young Sheik and had many wives to work in the field. Now he has only two donkeys and a few goats...

But I bet those two donkeys and those few goats don't talk back nearly as much as a bunch of wives!
